For nearly half a century, travelers from countries such as the U.S., U.K., and Australia have been accustomed traveling to Europe visa-free. However, with the emerging EU security measures, the same is meant to change. The founding of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is proposed as a new travel authorization for Europe, one that will need to be presented by non-EU citizens.

This blog sheds light on how the ETIAS system works, whom it applies to, and obtaining your ETIAS travel authorization to guarantee uninterrupted travel.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorization System, is not a visa; it is a digital travel authorization for pre-screening travelers who are exempt from a visa and arrive from abroad to Europe, more particularly the Schengen area. It is supposed to be an added layer of security at the external borders and ensure faster travel by flagging any potential security threat and illegal migration cases before the travelers reach the border. This system is equivalent to the U.S. ESTA and the U.K. ETA.

Who Needs an ETIAS Travel Authorization?

People coming from any of approximately 60 countries that so far are not requiring a Schengen visa for short-term sojourning in the area to get an ETIAS. This includes citizens of the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, Japan, and many other countries. Every traveler, no matter the age, needs to be holding this document for any time spent up to three months within a 180-day period.

How Does ETIAS Change Travel to Europe?

Previously, those travelers exempt from a visa could just arrive on the European side with a valid passport. The new system has made it compulsory for a traveler to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization for Europe prior to their departure date. Now, having added a new step to the travel procedure, it is quite simple and very quick; within moments, the majority of applicants receive approval. Once granted, a valid ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport and lasts until the expiration of your passport, or three years, whichever comes first.

The Simple ETIAS Application Process

The ETIAS application is filled online through a simple process:

  • A valid passport

  • An email address

  • Payment facilities for the €7 fee (travelers under 18 or over 70 are exempt)

  • Personal details

  • Travel history

  • Some simple health and security information

Most applications are approved within minutes but it is always better to apply well in advance of the trip.
